Things to Bring/Know - First Years
  • Though everything official says not to bring microwaves, hot plates, or anything else that could start a fire, common policy is "if I don't see it, it's not here;" basically, just bring whatever you feel like in the 'heating element' category, just don't be stupid. Please note, however, that there are sprinklers everywhere, and nothing in the dorm will burn, but if you get any amount of smoke in your room, the sprinkler is very likely to go off, costing you and/or your family something on the order of $60,000 for water damages (your sprinkler goes off, every sprinkler goes off...) So, please don't burn things.
  • You're provided with a desk, a dresser, shelving, and a closet, almost everything you need furniture-wise is here, I'd advise anyone to get here first, see what they have, then decide if they need more storage space.
  • You probably want atleast one desk lamp, and maybe a reading lamp for your bed.
  • Bathroom cleaning supplies... One of the first things your suite should do is work out who cleans the bathroom, and when, housing does it for you after each quarter, but please, clean your bathrooms more often than that.
  • The bike storage room is nice(and safe), and the jogging/biking trail up the lakefront is also nice, so bring a bike if you like.
  • Printers are nice to have, but not necesssary; there is a public printer, but you have to pay for it. Scanners and other useful stuff are in the dorm computer labs, which are pretty well appointed.
  • Sheets(extra long twin), towels, toiletries, detergent, etc
  • Dishware; unless you're diligent about cleaning dishes, it might make sense to go disposable...
  • Everything you need to hook your computer up to the internet is provided (namely an ethernet cable and a cd of some useful software.)
  • Feel free to play your musical instruments in your room, you might want to shut the door and clear it with your suitemates, but as long as its not painfully audible through the halls and stuff, don't worry about it.
    • do observe quiet hours though (after 11 on weeknights)
    • also, use the practice rooms, they're not that bad, and they're relatively big (the piano is awful, though)
  • Bring snack food and such... as First Years, you will have more meal points than you need for actual food (the kitchens in the dorm are kind of inconvenient). Bart Mart (convenience store located on the first floor of Bartlett Dining Hall) is a little expensive, but oh so convenient, and you can spend flex dollars there, and everyone knows that Flex Dollars are fake money, so spend away. (Your flex dollars don't reset until the end of the year, though, so save some for the end of the year, or you can add some at any time.)
  • Talk to your suitemates to decide what to do about a fridge, you'll probably want one. You can rent one when you get here, or just have one person in the suite buy it and share. You probably don't need more than one fridge.
  • TV? Up to you, but there's free cable and a DVD/player/vcr in the lounges.
  • Doorstops! The rooms in Palevsky close automatically, and the outer door to the suite will always lock (and then require both a card and pin number) this is inconvenient and antisocial. Everyone should prop their door open with something a) so they're not inconvenienced, and b) so people feel more free to stop by and hang out (this is a good thing). If you need privacy, there's still another door to your bedroom that you can close and/or lock. But bring a doorstop-esque device, brick, chunk of wood, personal doorman, whatever suits your fancy.
    • A Tip: the inner doors to your rooms will automatically lock whenever they are shut when you first move in. This is bad. This situation can be averted by simply swiping your keycard twice (quickly) in the inner door. The light should stay green for a few seconds, and then your inner door will never lock, this is very good to know. You can still lock it with the bolt, or restore the original setting, by swiping your card through the door twice again, this time, the light will stay red for a moment.
  • You can put money on your card that will make it work at some vending machines, and all the palevsky wachine machines, its a useful feature, the machine to put money your card is in the Foyer, its often out of service, but, you'll cope, we all do...
  • Mail Addressed to you, doesn't need your room number on it, but it doesn't hurt.
    • Give our mailroom an extra few days to process any incoming mail, its the Chicago way...
  • Its probably wise not to bring too many books (though it does give us one more thing to be pretentious about, there should be enough of that on campus already). I'd recommend just bringing a few old favorites, and maybe a few you plan on reading. Odds are you'll be taking enough reading courses to help fill whatever shelf space you left empty with many books of only the highest intellectual merit (Foucault notwithstanding). You may also follow my example of shoving certain books under your bed, in hopes of forgetting that they exist...
  • Don't forget a swimsuit, for the mandatory swim test.
    • It's really easy, if all else fails, just tread water back and forth a few times.
